Jazz Camp option BJO-Bigband

The big band option in cooperation with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra:

Once again this year, Halewyn Foundation, together with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, is anchoring the big band repertoire in operation to bring everyone into contact with this typical jazz style. This jazz course ensures the continuity of big band in the musical landscape and increases awareness of the genre among the public and jazz aficionados. In the morning you will join the instrument program of the course, from the afternoon you will study in big band sections and from late afternoon it will be tutti rehearsals. A week of intense collaboration and jamming with musicians who live for big band, jazz and improvisation. Raise your level a notch because a week playing in a big band, accompanied by top musicians from the BJO... can change your life!

Instrument classes

During the instrument lessons, improvisation, technique, solos, accompaniment, theory, interpretation and repertoire will be discussed:

  • Do you want to become better at your instrument, go deeper or broader in what you can already do?
  • Do you waste too much time practising? Are you not getting the most out of it?
  • Do you want to optimise your practice? Get new exercises and tips?
  • Would you like to be taught by professionals from the first (inter-) national level?
  • Can overwriting solos really help?
  • Does a stunning instrument technique seem unattainable?

Towards the end of the week, master classes are sometimes organised.

Rehearsals

During the section rehearsals, the repertoire of your section is rehearsed with a limited number of musicians - just the woodwinds, brass or rhythm section - under the expert guidance of a member of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra.

During big band rehearsals later in the day, the repertoire previously studied will be rehearsed in tutti formation, under the direction of Frank Vaganée, artistic director of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra.

Workshops and jam sessions

In the evening, you can choose between a wide range of workshops, an extra big band rehearsal or jam sessions.

More information can be found on the standard programme page.

Concerts

At the end of the course, the big band will perform two concerts with the repertoire rehearsed. One on Thursday or Friday (prior to the teachers' concert) and one on Saturday, together with some combos from the jazz week. This concert will take place at Zaal De Put, Destelheide and will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Every evening of the week, several classrooms remain open until midnight. You can then play freely or under supervision jamming. In constantly changing line-ups, with fellow students or with teachers.

  • Do you want to jam until the late hours?
  • Under the guidance of teachers?
  • Together with teachers?
  • Would you like to play with participants of a different level or in a different musical style?
  • Do you want to try out a different instrument?
